In FlexiSTAT, an optical tool measurement system was developed to measure arbitrary tools in a fast and accurate way. The system works in a way as a high precision camera takes a picture of the tool in front of a lightened backlight. Subsequently, an algorithm is applied to analyze the picture of the tool and to calculate all important tool parameters. Thus, it is possible to measure arbitrary tool shapes within seconds and with an accuracy of +- 0.1 µm. The system can be stored within the machine tool and is engaged into position by a robotic arm, corresponding to state-of-the-art measurement systems (see the following pictures and video).
